Help! [Jun. 29th, 2007|07:18 pm]
Kake
For the past few days, I've had great trouble viewing individual livejournal posts. I can view my friends page, but if I try to look at an individual post, it never loads. Very very very occasionally it does work, but this is extremely rare.

(Firefox just stops and gives me a blank page; Safari tells me "can't open the page [...] The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005"; Opera continues to display the page I was on previously and nothing changes except its progress bar appears and sits at 2% done for ages, then it gives me a redirection page with a link to click on; clicking on this makes a 7% done progress bar appear but nothing else happens.)

The weird thing is that if I log out, there's no problem; things load just fine. I'm not seeing any problems with any other websites either.

I've tested this in Firefox (2.0.0.4) (with and without greasemonkey turned on), Safari (2.0.2), and Opera (9.20), all on OS X. I can't remember when it started, but it's been going on for at least two days, possibly longer.

So if you put something under a cut in a friends-locked post, I probably haven't seen it, and if I haven't commented on something you would have expected me to comment on, this is why.

Is it just me having this problem? Any ideas at all why it might be happening?

*i'm 'aving difficulties posting this fer example*

erhmm, i wouldn't know above the above cos i don't get as many replies as yew when i make a post (so i wouldn't notice if someone couldn't see stuff i've posted behind a cut)...
...'owever i 'ave noticed the past couple of days that i no longer get email notification when people 'ave commented on my posts (i 'aven't altered my account), also sometimes it's takes ages for a new post i make to be visible...so i wonder whether LJ is 'aving some general problems at the mo'?

My email notifications are coming through, but they're very very delayed.

I've been having occasional problems of this sort, but not as consistently as you describe. But maybe LJ is having Issues? No idea why it would be worse for you, though.

(are doop and/or Bob having the same problems from their machines in your house?)

Bob logged in as Bob on Bob's laptop: no problems.
Me logged in as me on Bob's laptop: no problems.
Bob logged in as Bob on my laptop: no problems.

Boggle.

Although it does seem to be doing the thing where it suddenly starts working again, so those tests will have to be repeated when it starts being broken again.

I was going to say that it might be a problem with your account permissions, but I guess not. :S

I'm at a loss, sorry. Sometimes I get an error about formatting or the db being busy, but unless it's an actualy formatting/db problem it's always gone away if I refresh once or come back to it after a few minutes.

Maybe try completely uninstalling your browser and reinstalling it.

I remember having a problem with iGoogle on Opera where I could never see my GMail summary. It wouldn't go away if I simply upgraded Opera, but after uninstalling and reinstalling a newer version the problem cleared up immediatly.

I would try it in Lynx as that might provide more diagnostic information (particularly with -trace).

It sounds like something might be objecting to LiveJournal's cookies, although if you've tried it on three different browsers that does seem to rule out browser misconfiguration and maybe points towards a firewall somewhere?

The technical explanation for what I think is happening is this: Livejournal uses one cookie per journal you visit. When you attempt to view someone else's journal (this includes viewing a single entry within that journal) it checks to see whether you have a cookie less than about 24 hours old, and if not then it redirects you to a magic location on www.livejournal.com which will generate a cookie and thence to another magic location on <journalname>.livejournal.com which asks your browser to record it, and then sends you back to the page you were originally trying to view. Now if something caused the cookie to get lost along the way then LiveJournal will notice you are trying to view someone's journal without the appropriate cookie and so send you round the loop again. This means you are in an infinite redirection loop, and unless your browser has a maximum redirection limit then it will just appear to sit doing nothing.

The explanation for this explanation is to do with the cross-site-scripting attacks which happened a couple of years ago. The LiveJournal developers designed a system whereby your ultra-sekrit master cookie is only known to www.livejournal.com so that skript-kiddies can't steal it. On the other hand, when you view someone's journal, that journal has to know whether you have permission to read the entries in it, so it has to communicate in some way with www.livejournal.com to find out, and the above scheme is how it manages this.

However, if you view a journal while you aren't logged in then it skips the above process because it knows you can only view public entries. So the infinite redirection hell can't happen while you are logged out.

Makes sense. I'm wondering now if all the me-logging-in-on-Bob's-laptop stuff might have been what made it start working again.

I've been getting a few more of the random livejournal server errors lately, but not problems on that scale.

My sister mentioned that just lately, she can only see my entries, not the comments.

Do you have a custom style that you apply to other people's posts?

I do apply style=mine, but that's done with greasemonkey, which is why I tested it with greasemonkey off. I seem to be using S2 Generator with the default theme.

The problem does seem to have completely gone away - it's been working fine for nearly 6 hours now, which is way longer than before. I don't know if it was the "tell people about a tech problem and it will vanish" effect, or whether it really was the laptop-swapping that cleared something up.
