Cambridge, Wednesday. [Jul. 30th, 2007|06:09 pm]

I'll be in Cambridge on Wednesday evening to have dinner with ghoti and people. I plan to arrive some time in the afternoon and have a wander, maybe take some photos for the Open Guide to Cambridge. Anyone free and want to meet up? My only constraint is that I need to be at Restaurant 22 (on Chesterton Road) for 8pm.

Edited to add: I'll be able to buy an A-Z at the station, won't I? Got one!

(P.S. That's Cambridge, England, not any other Cambridge.)

You should be able to get an A-Z, as long as you get there when WH Smiths there is open. (It's on the through platform. Allegedly, says this here random website I found under a rock, it's open until 8pm during the week.)

Thank you! It seems doop has one hanging about, so I'll just bring that one (though it's from 2000, I doubt Cambridge has changed that much in seven years?)

And whether it has or not I don't think I've seen a more recent version of the A-Z.

I'd love to catch up, though it's somewhat dependent on me not having immense flight-related disasters.

Looks like I'll be there from lunchtime. I'll have my mobile phone with me (new one — number is linked from my profile).

I toook these photos a while ago intending to use them for the OG but never got round to it. I hereby place them in the public domain, in case they're any use to you.

Well, since I missed my actual Cambridge trip, I've been working through them this evening.

I could do with a bit of guidance on these ones:

If you'd like to see my manglings of your photos, they're in my Cambridge set on Flickr.

Thanks again!

If you're here early enough I'd love to grab lunch with you, or perhaps a coffee mid-afternoon? I'm afraid I'm going to the 6pm showing of Transformers with Mike, so there's not much gap between work and film, but you'd be very welcome to pop round for a coffee or something between 5:15 and 5:45 or so.

Lunch would be good, if it doesn't involve me leaving London too early! (I'd like to get a couple of hours' work done in the morning, but I'm waking up around 7am at the moment, and I'm only 10 minutes from Liverpool Street on the bus.) Not sure where you work in relation to the station? There are fairly sensible trains getting in at 12:21, 12:31, 12:44, and 13:02; I'd prefer the later end, but I'm happy to aim for any of them. Also happy to get a cab from the station to save time if necessary.

Late lunches are fine, so whichever train you get should be OK. Would you be preferring something veggie/vegan? I get the impression that you still largely like to eat that way even though meat is now on the menu. There are good noodles at Dojos.

And The Mill round the corner has Old Rosie if we've time for a drink after lunch.

Both noodles and pub sound great :) How long do you think the walk from the station will take? I'm not very fast (and I tend to get distracted by things to photograph).

It's a good question. Best route is probably down Hills Road, Lensfield Road, Trumpington Street, in which case I can meet you as you turn onto the latter, since that's where I work. I'd expect maybe 20 minutes for a walk along to there? It's just under a mile:

(Actually Bateman Street and Brookside is going to be prettier, but less easy to just follow)

Cool. I was thinking of roughly that route, but diverting down Panton Street since there's a pub there that needs a photograph. Maybe we could meet at 13:30? Then I can get the later train, and it gives me time to stop and take photos too. Is the corner visible from your office, or should I give you a call when I'm nearly there? (Is the mobile number linked from your memories current?)

13:30 is fine, and a photo of the Panton Arms is a good idea. There's also the Alma on Russell Court nearby.

The contact details (me) is up-to-date, yes, and it is best to ring me if you're running late or early but otherwise I'll just come out around then. There's a statue outside the main entrance to engineering (on the left hand side of Trumpington Street, just after the terrace with the Cambridge Hotel in), I can meet you there.

Seeing you would be good, but I'm not sure the timings will work nicely with where you need to be - I can only get to Cambridge at 6.40pm and then need to get a train home at either 8.43pm or 10.43pm. I don't really want to be hanging around Cambridge for two hours, so I want the 8.43pm train home, which doesn't gives me two hours (deducting a bit of time for getting to the train station early enough). Let me know if this fits in somewhere sensibly.

Hm, given I have to be at the restaurant for 8pm, and you'll be coming from the station, we'd only get an hour, so it's probably not worth it. I will plan another visit at some point though!

I am coming back from Amsterdam that evening. I may or may not be able to come to a pub before closing time. Are you going to a pub later or going back to London?

I'm not sure what time I'll get back to Cambridge in the afternoon, but I suspect it will probably be too late to meet up before evening things start happening.

If I do happen to make it back at a reasonable time I'll ping your mobile to see if meeting up is an option.

I was having similar thoughts, not sure what other plans I might fill in for the day, but worst case we can sit in a pub post-lnr, pre-dinner.

Is "wandering around taking photos for the OpenGuide" a better or worst case than sitting in a pub? :)

Are you planning to try and make it for lunch too? If not, roughly what time will you be aiming for? You have my mobile number, anyway, and I have yours.
