This is what came out of my camera.

This is what came out of the GIMP.

Blimey.

Incidentally, that photo was taken at the temporary mushroom market in Spitalfields run by Carluccio's. There's one in Oxford in a few weeks' time; more info and the rest of my photos are here.

I'll remember that next time I need to buy some temporary mushrooms...

They really were quite temporary, given the amount I bought. The mushroom strudel, mushroom quiche, and mushroom caponata have already vanished, but there's some smoked haddock and mushroom stew left in the fridge.

The Gimp is obviously correcting colour balance for the ambient lighting when you took the photo.

Not sure I understand this comment — do you really mean that the only difference you can see is what would have happened if I just loaded up the Levels tool and pressed the "auto" button?

Hmm. Not quite. Photographs in Tungsten lighting have a different colour warmth to natural light, for example. I don't know what camera you use (or I forget to look at the flickr info) and so I am not sure how it handles colour-balance an/or whether you have the camera set to do auto-colour-balance. I don't think levels does exactly the same thing but it might approximate or simulate a similar effect.

I am sorry - I am failing to explain this, aren't I... I will try to try again tomorrow once I have slept.

Sleep well! Yes, do try to explain again once you've rested.

OK, I'll see if I can help. I think perhaps you interpreted my original post as "I loaded the photo in GIMP and pressed a button and it automatically made it good"? That's not what happened; it took maybe 20-30 minutes of fiddling. The reason I think this is like magic is that it goes far beyond what I used to think photo manipulation software could do.

I think that I read it as:

"I loaded the photo in GIMP and it automatically made it good"

...without any button presses. My bad. Sorry.
