Book swap — Wednesday 10 January. [Dec. 31st, 2006|09:49 am]

The book swap is going to be on Wednesday 10 January. It'll be from 7pm to 10pm at our place in Bermondsey — address details here (if you can't see that post and you want to come, please shout). I'm happy for people not on my friends list to be pointed at this; I like meeting new people.

Bring books you don't want! And adopt books that other people have brought.

I'll do food — will be buffet-style, enough to be your dinner, and available from the start of the evening. Vegans will be catered for by default; let me know if you have some other dietary restriction that I need to take into account.

I'm happy for people to come at the start and stay till the end; or to just pop in briefly to drop off some books; or anything in between.

If you want to participate by mail, then send books to the address linked above, and I'll post you one/some back.

If I'd mail you a book or two, would they get there on time (from The Netherlands)?

Also, would it be OK to do books registered with BookCrossing?

I'm not going to ask the third question that crossed my mind, because I am quite certain you wouldn't find any takers for books in Dutch...

I think you're best off asking your own postal service about this (might be something on their website?) — I really don't know, I'm afraid.

I don't know; what difference does it make? I don't know the details of BookCrossing.

I don't think I'm expecting anyone who speaks Dutch, no :)

The idea of BookCrossing is to tag books with a reference number and then send them on a journey, with the idea that everyone can take them along from where you leave them, and register their find on the website, and when they're done reading it leaving it somewhere for someone else to find again.

I can find costs of sending books on the website (they have a special rate for sending books, actually) but not how long it'd take...

Ah, right, I see. Well, you're welcome to send such books, but I don't think I'm going to be able to make sure they go to someone who's willing to pass them on/register their "find" on the site. Also, the leftover books will be going to Freecycle. So it's up to you!

Re length of time for books to get here, the Royal Mail website says it would take up to 2 weeks to send a surface mail package from the UK to "anywhere in Western Europe" — but that doesn't necessarily mean it would take that long in the other direction as well.

FWIW, if I were to come I'd snap up any books in French, Italian, German or Latin, but then I'm a bit weird like that. And I can't come anyway. Wednesday night is the Twickenham Go Club, but it's my own silly fault for not squeaking appropriately in your poll.

Ah well, you make sure you have another of these, young lady, and then I shall grace you with my beardy presence :-)

I'd love to come, but am woirking that day, so will have to check. I've recently reorganised bookshelves and come up with more duplicates. I should be able to bring them.

I'm sorry I didn't pick one of the days you chose in the poll; this week has a big deadline in it. It would be very good to see you if you can make it!

I wasn't really expecting you to work it around me; I live in foreign! But thankyou.
