Ooh. [Jul. 2nd, 2004|12:39 am]
Kake
Livejournal email notifications have started using In-Reply-To headers. Well, they started around the 22nd of June, but I've only just noticed.

I'm the only person who's going to get excited about this, aren't I?

And sensible-looking Message-ID fields. (In 822-speak, you have one header which consists of multiple fields, incidentally, though other things that borrow the same syntax often depart from this convention.)

Nope. I'd been hoping for it for ages, then found it right after they started doing it and was very happy.

Now, if only Gmail would handle threading a little more sensibly and actually *make use* of them rather than letting the common sender address bugger things up...

Ah-ha, yes, I missed your post about this. I think I have too many people on my default view; I don't check this thing often enough to have a manageable unread posts queue.

Not the only one.. I was a mail geek in a former life.. communications technology is one of those areas where I wish people were more rigorous.

I dunno about excited but I certainly think it's damn useful - gives me a rough idea which of the coments I splatter cheerily over assorted random communities are suddenly attracting attention :)

If I was actually getting more than 70% of my email notifications I might be able to get excited about it...

How do the headers help, anyway?

The notifications stand a chance of threading properly in a mailer now.

Didn't notice, really*. I'm not that excited. It does mean that multiple comments on my journal ought to thread correctly if I happen to keep them all in my mailbox; but I don't get that many of them, and it hardly helps at all for other people's journals for which I obviously don't get the comments emailed to me.

*I vaguely remember being mildly surprised last night when a couple of comments appeared to be threaded together, but I've deleted one of them now so they aren't any more.
